William Patry - Featured Author

Few individuals have made a more significant and unique contribution to copyright law and practice than William Patry. The breadth of his experience is amazing - currently senior copyright counsel to Google, he spent 12 years in private practice; eight in government service, including a stint as copyright counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives; and five as a law professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. All of this makes the release this month of his seminal work, Patry on Copyright, an especially momentous event.
Into this work, which was seven years in the making but draws on many more years of previous work, Patry has poured his firsthand knowledge of how the copyright law of today has been crafted, applied, and taught. He thus provides the reader with a depth of knowledge and understanding unmatched by any other copyright work on the market. As Patry writes, "Copyright does not arise out of a vacuum or out of academic models; it is, instead, a response to real life disputes, full of compromises, intrigues, and deals that make impossible a coherent, unified theory."
This seven-volume treatise, with a foreword by retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, is destined to take its place along with Wright & Miller, Prosser, and McCarthy as a transformational work of enduring value.
