 West km New Features

New Features in West km®

Architecture
Several scalability and infrastructure changes were made to distribute indexing and increase West km performance:

  • Greater support for multiserver configurations, including the ability to separate the West km delivery server from the indexing server
  • Support for multiple HTML document servers
  • A new folder structure for HTML documents, which includes several layers of subfolders
  • The use of multiple HTML storage locations and full-text indexes

Security
Additional security options were added to meet all customer configurations and ensure that the West km environment is as secure as possible:

  • Additional authentication models are available, including custom West km authentication.
  • A West km IIS lockdown utility installs Microsoft® IIS Lockdown 2.1 and URLScan 2.5 and configures NTFS permissions.
  • West km is more tightly integrated with Windows security. All file input/output in West km now uses a Windows user account, which is set up in the administrative tool under System Options.

Citation Identification
The following reference identification (RID) improvements were made:

  • Citation identification performance was improved (up to 50 percent) by installing more citation information locally on the West km server, so fewer calls to the Cite ID servers at West are required. This changes affects both West km indexing and the Insert Flags feature in the West km client application.
  • Federal Register citations are now found and verified.

The accuracy and completeness of citation identification and verification have been improved. Handling of citation identification exceptions was improved in the West km client application. If a problem is encountered in citation identification, processing will now resume in the next paragraph of the document; previously, processing would cease for the remainder of the document.

KeySearch
The KeySearch taxonomy is now available for classifying and retrieving your organization’s documents. (KeySearch is a legal research tool from West that allows you to easily and precisely retrieve documents from a hierarchy of legal topics.) Your documents can be manually classified to topics, retrieved via topic-specific, full-text queries, or automatically classified to relevant topics using West’s classification and routing engine (CaRE). When you select a standard KeySearch topic in westlaw.com®, you can opt to retrieve Westlaw documents, your organization’s documents, or both. In the West km pages, KeySearch is also provided for just your organization’s documents.

KeySearch Administration
Information managers at your organization can customize the KeySearch hierarchy (in a KeySearch administrative view) by creating, editing, and hiding or deleting topical nodes as applicable for your practice. Information managers can also manually assign and remove your organization’s documents from KeySearch topics on a document-by-document basis. Customization does not affect the standard West KeySearch hierarchy, which is still accessible at any time.

Administrators at your organization can choose from several document classification options when indexing new or existing document collections in the legacy administrative tool:

  • Elect to automatically classify documents in the collection using CaRE
  • Elect to run CaRE on only those documents in the collection that contain citations
  • Assign all documents in the collection to selected KeySearch topics

Display Names for Grouping Documents
Administrators can assign a display name, such as an office or a practice area, to documents during indexing. This name can be assigned at either the database or the document collection level. For example, you could assign the name "Boston" to all defined databases from your Boston office. Or you could assign the name "Litigation" to all document collections that use a DMS query to retrieve litigation-specific documents. Documents with the same display name can then be grouped in West km results-for example, to restrict the list of your organization’s documents in a search result to just documents from the Boston office.

Searching in westlaw.com
The search feature in westlaw.com has been enhanced to allow you to search only Westlaw documents from the Westlaw database Search page. Combined searches of both your organization’s documents and Westlaw documents are still the default, but you can opt to clear the check box that indicates your organization’s documents should also be searched.

West km Client Application
The following enhancements were made to the West km word-processing client:

  • Performance of the Insert Flags and Update Flags features in Microsoft Word has been improved to display results more quickly. For a 20-page document with 100 citations, the process should take no longer than 30 seconds.
  • When installing the West km client, you can configure the application so that it will (1) bypass prompts for the matter ID, and (2) automatically delete citation markup from word-processing documents when save operations are performed. (Note: These options are not available in Word 97.)
  • The West km client application is now compatible with Corel® WordPerfect® 8, 9, and 10.
