Westlaw Research Trails allow you to retrace the steps you took during recent Westlaw sessions. They keep track of every search you run, every document you view, every link you follow, and every citation you check. Research Trails are available to all Westlaw users; simply click the Research Trail link at the top of any Westlaw page.

What can I use them for?

Westlaw Research Trails provide a fast and easy way to return to research you haven't completed and to document your research efforts. You can also use them to check the thoroughness of a new associate's work.

Conduct routine Westlaw searches.
Research Trails can be renamed for easier recall, and you can add notes to your trail to indicate topics, clients, or other information.

Share your searches with others.
You can e-mail your Research Trails to yourself or your colleagues - and, if you want, you can have your Research Trails automatically sent to a specified e-mail address every time you sign off.

Re-run searches from the past two weeks.
Research Trails are saved for 14 days. You can save individual trails longer by resetting their expiration dates.

How much does it cost to use this feature?

Hourly Westlaw users who use Westlaw Research Trails are billed at their hourly rate. Transactional pricing-plan users can return to any Research Trail created on the same day at no additional charge until 2 a.m. (local time) the following morning. Same-day (free) Research Trails are clearly marked with a black dot.
